Let Rey out?

  • Yes, the justice system fails to truly rehabilitate the incarcerated by placing them into a hostile environment that only reinforces the tendencies that lead to them breaking the law. Rey is a victim. (58%, 7 Votes)
  • No, he’s only got like an hour of detention left. (42%, 5 Votes)

I feel like last week’s poll ultimately came down to “do you want to see a poop joke next week?”

I apologize for nothing.

I was thinking, at the end of this story arc do you guys want me to create an option tree that would show what would have happened had other options been selected?

Thunder Moo works outside the law to help solve problems that the authorities can’t, but, she wouldn’t call herself “justice”. If she breaks Rey out, she’s declaring herself completely and totally above the law – and once she’s above the law and allows herself to decide guilt and innocence, and the appropriate punishments thereof, she’s no longer a Hero, just a violent vigilante.

Hey, Mr. Verburg, I realize that this is kinda out of the blue, but I’m going to the Rose city Comic Con in Portland OR this weekend, and I was wondering if you had any tips or advice on what to expect at a convention. It’s my first con ever, AND I’ll be trying out the ODST costume I’ve been working on for the last year, so I’m pretty nervous. I’ve been asking everyone I know that’s been to any con, and I figured that, as a member of the 405th, you’d definitely have some sage advice.

I’m not Mr. Verburg, but I’ve been to a handful of cons so maybe I could help?
-Know which panels you want to attend ahead of time, and plan to get to them early as most of the time, the rooms fill up pretty quick.
-Similarly, if possible, try to use your first hour or so of the con to familiarize yourself with the convention area. It’s a heck of a lot easier to get around when you’ve already walked the general area + it’s handy to know where restrooms and drinking fountains are.
-Drink lots of water! I mean, drinking lots of water is a good idea every day, but, soda and energy drinks actually dehydrate you, and you don’t want your convention experience ruined by the headaches and lightheadedness that dehydration brings. (Plus, it’s LOUD on the convention floor, and noise doesn’t go well with headaches.)
-Wear comfortable walking shoes/sneakers. Even if you’re athletic, if you’re not used to standing and walking all day long, it can leave you pretty sore by the end of the day.
-If possible, bring cash for the vendor booths/artist’s alley. There’s tons of awesome stuff to buy, and making yourself use cash only will be massively helpful in not overspending.
-Be courteous of other guests! If you want to take a picture of someone’s cosplay, ask first – and, whether you’re taking a picture or having your picture taken, it’s a good idea to move out of the path of traffic.
-Similarly, if you’re talking with a vendor or artist on the salesfloor, pay attention if you might be in the way. While most of these folks are more than happy to geek out with you, be respectful of the fact that they are there to make a living.
-Look up what the weather will be like ahead of time – on days that you cosplay, if it’s going to be really hot or really cold, you might want to consider bringing a change of clothes so you don’t overheat or freeze.
-You may want to consider packing a cosplay repair kit. Many big cons have a courtesy Cosplay First Aide station, but often it boils down to cheap super glue and white thread. You’ll likely enjoy the peace of mind of having the correct materials to fix any small wear and tear damage from the day. (Plus, in my experience, the Cosplay First Aide staffers are experienced in cosplay, and will still help you take a few minutes to repair using the supplies you brought with you.)
-Don’t eat at the convention center if you can help it. It’s expensive, and a lot of large city convention centers are usually within a block or two of lots of cheaper, tastier restaurants.
-If you’re going with a group of friends/family, decide on a spot ahead of time that you’ll meet up once or twice during the day, and where you’ll meet when it’s time to go. It’s good to have this planned in advance, in case someone’s phone dies, or gets lost or stolen. It takes a lot of the stress out of trying to figure out where everyone is.
-Beware of Con Crud. You’re going to be surrounded by thousands of strangers, and odds are, at least a few of them are sick, and several of them are just plain disgusting, unclean people. Of course, it’s not guaranteed, but be prepared to deal with having a cold or flu within a week of getting home.
-Finally, you’re there to have fun, right? Try to let any little annoyances and disappointments in the day roll of your back. It sucks to miss out on a panel you wanted to see, but it sucks more to realize you took the time and effort to go to the con only to let one missed panel ruin the whole trip.

That’s everything I can think of, though it’s less “what to expect” and more “how to survive”. Enjoy yourself, make memories, make friends, take lots of pictures. Hope the sailing is all smooth for you!
