Frustration

May 11, 2014

I’m not necessarily criticizing Call of Duty for copying Halo or anything like that. All the sci-fi elements introduced in the “Advanced Warfare” will be applied in a way unique to Call of Duty, and most of those elements weren’t introduced in Halo anyways. I mostly made this comic because I wanted to torture Austin.

Even though it’s what we claim, gamers don’t want innovation. Each new CoD/Madden/Super Mario/Pokemon/GTA does better sales than the previous, squashing mainstream publishers’ cares about testing out new grounds, and causing many of them to release titles that attempt to copy each other’s major franchises and cranking out new editions faster than they can be properly tested for bugs. (Much like what is happening in the film industry as well; sequels/reboots/remasters are consistently doing better in the Box than original material.)

The Game Theorists have a great video about this, aptly titled “Are Gamers Killing Games?”, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxhs-GLE29Q

Lionhead Studios and Fable…Fable did epically well and within a year or two Fable the lost chapters was out and just exploded and then Fable II did just OK and Fable III crashed and burned and then Fable anniversary just exploded and did better then II or III did combined. People don’t want change, they want new missions and stories to play but they don’t want the game itself to change.

It’s a torn issue for me. I like Halo 4’s multiplayer, but not as much as Halo 3’s. But I mean, how do you build up from Halo 3, you know? They have to change certain things up or else they ARE shipping out the same game with a different title.

I’ve always liked that Halo games will have playlists that are meant to play exactly like the previous games though. That’s always a nice addition.

Anyways. What I don’t like is games copying other games. Other games trying to score the fanbase of a game that’s successful. Shooters trying to be Call of Duty, and failing because only CoD can be CoD. MMO’s attempting to bring in WoW’s players, and failing because WoW players want to play WoW, not some new game they haven’t invested years into.

Yeah every time I go to a movie, I play a “let’s spot the actually original movie trailer!!” game.

I never count more than one.

maybe I go to the movies more then you…or maybe less or maybe my nerdom is just greater then yours but I almost never see an original concept in the previews

Sequels and reboots and digital re-releases in 3D are just safer financially to the producers. Sucks.

The thing is with Pokemon, it’s a game franchise that if it were a PC game, would have expansions. Because that’s the nature of the game, to release more Pokemon each time.

However, they do add changes from game to game.
X&Y fundamentally added the concept of Mega-Evolution. Where a Pokemon would gain a different Ability (unless you’re Abomasnow) and in most cases, let them behave differently.

Throughout the series, you have had mechanical changes.

It’s just the basic Turn-Based combat has remained the same, as the formula for storyline. I don’t think people like things completely alien in a franchise. Save that for new franchises or Spin-off games (Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon Rumble, Pokemon Trozei etc…)

Saying Pokemon never changes is like me saying Halo is exactly identical from game to game. Because all you do is shoot at people.

        That’s entirely accurate!

I think you’re mixing up causality and correlation…

While it is true that a large mainstream audience group prefers the things you mention.
There remains a group of gamers that DO want the innovation.

Just because there’s a larger audience that likes instant gratification and accessibility doesn’t mean that they represent the entirety of all gamers.
It just means that thats the easiest group to cater to as a corporate publisher/developer.

shame that they are going to taint a good game by copying most of it and ‘tweaking’ it ever so slightly, in my eyes CoD was dead since MW1

Yeah its unfortunate. Its interesting that the game found its roots in bringing historical warfare to life and its been going sci-fi more and more with each release. I mean, at one game a year I guess we can’t expect new content from the historical era.

But then again, no one that I know who is an active CoD fan even plays it for the campaign :|

precisely, the campaign is always quite terrible anyways (i have played every single one thanks to my brother) and the campaign is ALWAYS either the same or just terrible so they should really focus on the multiplayer, and if black ops 1 was anything to go by with the more recent games the optimization will be terrible for PC too

I don’t even think it’d hurt their marketing at all if they just centered it on the multiplayer. Every time I’m listening to the developers talk about how excited they are for this campaign feature and this story moment and these characters, I feel bad because maybe 10% of their players will even start a campaign haha
