Expanded Universe

Yeah yeah, I know, May the Fourth was last week. But when is there a time NOT to do a Star Wars comic? I mean really. I had fun making the lightning here. I’m tempted to take pictures of random people and applying force lighting to them.

Anyways, I can’t help but feel bad for anyone who was really invested into the Star Wars EU post Return of the Jedi. I’m sure most of them wanted to see those stories adapted into movies. Because I hadn’t read any of those books, the movies would have been new to me. But then my friends have told me those stories and all the best twists and stuff, so there’d be some things I saw coming.

And lets face it, the best part about the movies not being based on the EU is that we WON’T see anything coming. We didn’t have that in the prequels, we always new what was going to happen next. There was no mystery, honestly. With the new trilogy, anything can happen. There’s actually a chance for another iconic “I am your father” moment.

But even before LucasFilm de-canonized the EU, did we really need them to do so for them to tell us they didn’t care about that continuity outside of the paycheck it brought it? Lucas has published so many conflicting stories that you could only pick the one you liked the best and ignore the others.

And even though The Clone Wars and the new show Rebels is held on the same level of continuity as the movies, and even though I liked Clone Wars, I don’t consider those canon either. I’m only attached to the movies.

So what I’m saying is I think its good they’re not basing the movies off anything. I feel bad for those following the EU, and I acknowledge 100% that I’d probably be as mad as they were if I were as invested. I just hope this is a good thing for Episode VII.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the post-Return EU still being written? Like it’s just not canon but hey, here’s a cool story? I thought I read that somewhere.

and actually back in the 80’s Lucas said he’d actually written 4 trilogies for a total of 12 stories and he started with Episode 4 because he felt the 2nd trilogy would be the most commercial (meaning he knew that the so-called “prequel” trilogy simply wasn’t going to be as good and so he waited to make it later on purpose) and then he made the EU canon and so he never bothered with the 3rd and 4th trilogies, also Episode VII is supposed to take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi so there’s possible quite a bit of the EU intact such as Timothy Zahn’s Dark Force Rising trilogy, which takes place just a few years after Jedi or The Sun Eater Trilogy which takes place about 7 years after Jedi and who knows we may not see him but because Boba Fett’s survival takes place within the time line of Jedi he might actually still be alive just you know retired since he was about 10 in Episode II and then didn’t show up again until Episode IV like 25 years later and then there’s a couple years between IV and V and another year or so between V and VI so according to the timeline by VII he’d be almost 70 and at that age I’m sure he’s not still out bounty hunting around he’d have to be retired or dead by some other means by then so I wouldn’t worry to much about the EU 30 years is a LONG time to play around with

Huh I just read that about him having the sequel trilogy planned back in the 80s. While I like Luke Skywalker’s character, I’d really rather see a new character like Luke’s son take the role of lead character.

Disney may abandon the EU, but they’ll probably reboot that one old made-for-TV special where Han and Chewie save Christmas.

    We’re doomed.

hahahaha so long as they give Darth Vader grinch like role as he visits Kashyyk to steal all their presents. And at the ending he learns the spirit of Christmas and goes back to the light side for just one day. And then goes back to being a dick haha

You know what I love about Darth Mickey? He’ll kill you for disagreeing with him, but remains very rational and level headed throughout the process, debating you in case you change your mind. What a morally complex character.

Of course, now Max will give him money so he can see the new trilogy. Long live the Disney Empire.
