Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is DairyBoy Comics?
So I made this website to have a place I could collect any sort of projects I work on related to comics. Primarily there is my web-comic Austin’s Inferno. I also have a diary comic about making Halo cosplay called Anvil Station Stories, and some other stuff in the works.
And of course, the most important thing I’ve ever done, my Shrek Souls fan art.
Why the name “DairyBoy Comics”?
I grew up on a dairy farm. That’s pretty much all that inspired the name lol
What is your posting schedule?
Austin’s Inferno currently posts around once a week, usually on Fridays. On occasion, story arcs will be completed ahead of time and posted more frequently.
Anvil Station Stories updates once a month.
Shrek Souls fan art happens upon inspiration. One simply does not force real art into the world before it is ready.
What is Austin’s Inferno about?
Austin’s Inferno is about a small town high school where weird shit happens. Yeah I know that doesn’t sound very original BUT the lead character is a kind of goof ball who gets into all sorts of trouble but at the end of every episode he sets things right. NO OKAY yeah that doesn’t sound that unique BUT WAIT he is a gamer and he has a best friend who is also a gamer and they talk about video games and all sorts of nerdy things. Shit okay maybe that’s been done before, but the lead character is based on myself and is loosely based on my life growing up. DAMN IT WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT’S ALSO BEEN DONE BEFORE?? SHIT ASS SHIT.
Ultimately the comic is about a taco-snacking classroom-slacking Halo obsessed high schooler attempting to live some sort of normal life as his journalist classmates uncover the weirdness of the world around them. And sometimes a robot tyrannosaurus rex shows up.
How do you make your comic?
Photoshop and Illustrator, with a Wacom tablet named Cindy!
How long does each comic take to make?
Depends. If the script is already written, I can usually have it done in about three to four hours. Script writing can take the bulk time and if I’m working from scratch, it can add anywhere between an hour to four hours to the process.
Because of this I like to write up as many scripts as I can ahead of time.
Why the name “Austin’s Inferno”?
The comic actually started off a sort of diary comic back in high school where I poked fun at various friends and events going on around campus. It was run on the school paper and was my first taste of doing comics. Back then it was called “Our Average High School Lives”. Not a very creative name, but I’m not a very creative person.
After I graduated, foiling President Obama’s plans of stopping me from entering society, I decided to give the whole web-comic thing a spin. The first thing I actually wanted to do was a parody of the 2010 video game “Dante’s Inferno”. But I had been sitting on long form story that I became pretty inspired to go forward with, so I scrapped the parody but kept the title. Thus we ended up with “Austin’s Inferno”.
Is Austin’s Inferno based on real events?
Nope. While it’s similar to other diary comics such as the fantastic Beefpaper in that a good number of lead characters are based on myself and some friends, the stories are entirely fictional. All villains are fictional. The setting, Easton CA, while a place you can look up on a map, has been re-imagined to a point that it itself is pretty fictional also.
If I could go back, I’d probably make all the characters fictional too, or at least swap out the names with made up ones. But I’ve also become pretty attached to them, outside of the fact that the central cast is based on people I knew in high school, as they have developed into their own characters over time.
Why the name “Anvil Station Stories”?
The Halo cosplay club I am a part of is called Anvil Station. Then I added “Stories” to the title because I wanted the initials to spell ASS.
You can learn more about how to become an Anvil Station Spartan, also ASS for short, on the Anvil Station website.
Any other comic ideas planned?
I have something in the works right now. Stay tuned.
Why so many Halo references and plot lines in the comic?
An original goal was to make Halo comics. At the time of starting the comic, 343’s community manager would share Halo themed comics and I was inspired to contribute to this.
I ended up having quite a few shared! Because of this, a decent number of my fans are from the Halo fandom, so I get to enjoy making the occasional Halo themed comic from time to time. (Most of the time [Like a whole lot of the time {As much as is creatively possible with a little shoehorning}]).
Who made your website?
Do any of your friends help you out?
My friend Tony has edited many of the comics to make sure my English and spelling isn’t shitty. He comments regularly as “mitspeiler” on the site. Give him a shout, he’s a pretty cool guy.
Your comic sucks.
Yep.
Why do you censor the F-word with FRONK?
I’m not squeamish about cursing. I have nothing against the word [FRONK]. I just think censoring it that way makes it funnier every time I would otherwise just use the word [FRONK].
I use FRONK specifically because a friend one time meant to say [FRONK] but shouted FRONK instead.
It was really [FRONK]ing hilarious.
Is there a ship you support?
Tony and Battle T-Rex. Their romance may be challenged by the fact they are of two different species separated by millions of years, but love, uh, ah, finds a way.
What is Battle T-Rex’s origin?
Too much chocolate pudding.
What’s the deal with the duck always watching Christian?
What duck?
When are the shadowy guys going to do something?
When the time is right. And the chocolate pudding is ready.
Will you ever publish a book?
I wouldn’t bet on it.
Are you trying to monetize your comic?
Not really. The ads occasionally help me cover the cost of hosting. I have a day job that I actually really love and even if I could make some money from doing web-comics, I’d probably still keep working on my career. A few comic friends have suggested doing a patreon, but that’s an adventure for another day.
I will never put a price on creating Shrek Souls fan art.
Do you go to Comic Conventions?
Yes I do! Wonder Con and San Diego Comic Con would be the two big ones that I prioritize. But you might catch me at a few others in LA from time to time, or smaller ones in San Diego.
If you are ever at the same con as me, keep an eye out for a Master Chief or Darth Revan cosplayer. But ask to make sure it is me before kicking the person, lots of other people cosplay Master Chief and Revan.
How’d you get into cosplay?
I plan to cover that whole adventure in the Anvil Stations Stories comics. To sum it up, I gave it a shot one year at SDCC and made a bunch of fantastic friends because of it. There was no going back.
Will you play video games with me?
I am trying to make community play dates a thing. It’s very difficult at this time *sad face*. I have a super tight schedule between work and maintaining the comic. I do have time for video games but I’m a bit of a single player kind of person and am super introverted, so I tend to focus on beating whatever single player game I am working on when I do play.
But making time for a quick match in Halo is super doable, so if that’s what you fancy then go ahead and add my gamertag! DairyBoy117
I also enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic if that’s of interest to anyone.
What are your thoughts on the current political state of our country?
Why yes I WAS in an episode of Red Vs. Blue.
What? That wasn’t my question.
Link you to the episode? Oh sure of course. You can watch it here.
None of this has anything to do with my question.
WHICH CHARACTER DID I PLAY YOU ASK? Why I was none other than Tucker! Bow chicka wow wow.
I mean it was a stunt double on the motor cycle scene and the shot jumping away from the grenade, but every other shot including the one with the big explosion was me.
Fun fact, the Master Chief suit I built was made with the same files that were used to create the Tucker suit from that episode!
Favorite video game?
Nancy Drew. Halo is a close second.
What’s your favorite Halo?
Halo 2. Favorite campaign, and countless custom games memories. I also liked Halo 3: ODST a lot because you got to feel like a detective, just like Nancy Drew.
Granted, I love any given episode of the Nancy Drew video game series leaps and bounds more than every Halo combined.
Do you prefer Bungie or 343?
Both studios know how to make a good multiplayer, but I feel like Bungie had story telling down a bit more. In the end it’s all for fun and giggles so I try not to get caught up in the aspects of fandoms over-critiquing creators, as difficult as that can be sometimes. I do however still believe criticism should be delivered in a way that is professional and understanding so that you can see things improve the way you want them to.
It’s all irrelevant because Halo is hot garbage compared to Nancy Drew.
Do you read any of the Halo novels?
Yes. Eric Nylund’s stuff was god tier.
I’m anxious to get into the Nancy Drew book series though.
What other games do you like?
I’m a pretty big fan of Dark Souls, considering it’s 100% undeniable fact that it takes place in the same universe as Shrek.
Shrek Souls as a video game would be the only thing I would love more than Nancy Drew.
Any game recommendations?
Can you put me in your comics?
Not as a character. Sometimes I’ll put readers in the backgrounds. I’ll let people know when this is happening.
Can you do this comic idea of mine?
No, but I encourage you to make it yourself, you may have the most fun ever! :D
Touch my butt.
What?
Come on. Just a little touch.
